Whole Wheat Pizza Crust for Family Pizza Night!




Pizza is known as a junk food. And when you get it from places like Little Caesar's or Dominoes.. it is. Unfortunately, those pizzas have a LONG list of ingredients that aren't real food, aren't nourishing and aren't even recognizable sometimes.


But pizza can be a nourishing meal!

When I started feeding my family real food, I switched to making my own pizza with this whole wheat pizza crust recipe. No enriched, bleached flour. No preservatives. No nonsense. And man is it good!


Note: wheat can be inflammatory. It has anti nutrients like phytic acid - a barrier around the grain that makes it hard to digest. This can be mitigated by soaking the wheat or using sourdough.


I haven't taken the step to do that, but I do think it's a great option if you struggle with digesting grain or wheat.


I recommend using a quality marinara or pizza sauce. I like Aldi's organic marinara. As well as using FRESHLY shredded mozzarella, as pre-shredded is coated with cellulose.


For toppings - the sky is the limit! I like to get some quality animal protein on ours - like pastured Italian sausage or nitrate free pepperoni. Olives, onions, peppers are some of our favorite veggie toppings. Use what you like!


Whole Wheat Pizza Crust Recipe


Makes one large thick crust, or 2 thin/medium crusts.


Directions: 

  • Mix 1 tsp sugar in 1 & 1/2 cup warm water (110 F)

  •  Sprinkle in 1 tbsp active yeast and let stand for 10 minutes or until foamy. 

  • Add 1 tbsp olive oil, 2 Tbl molasses (optional but so good)  and 1 tsp salt

  •  Add 2 cups whole wheat flour and 1 cup unbleached flour  (try to use organic flours)

  • Add 1/2 cup more flour while kneading. Knead about 6 minutes until springy.

  •  Set to rise until about double  in size. 

  • Stretch and place on pan/s. 

  •  Bake at 425 F for 5 minutes

  •  Add toppings, bake at 425 F for 10-12 minutes.
